  3. Definitions • Mentor: “Wise and trusted teacher or counselor” • Mentee: “Protégé” • Reminder: Must retain independence

  4. Institution • University level: (Faculty Development) • Provost • VP Research • College • Department • Most appropriate since mentoring is in part discipline specific • Three important entities: mentee, mentor and department head/chair

  5. Issues Expectation, progress and review process Funding: proposal preparation, quality, opportunity Duration of mentoring Balance of effort Space and laboratory Teaching/instruction Graduate students Personal, gender related issues

  6. Mentor • Early engagement – proactive rather than reactive • Available, assist and not clone • Overlap of disciplines/interests? • Collaboration on projects? • Guide on funding opportunities and proposal development • Encourage, but honest (and confidential) • One versus multiple mentors

  7. Mentee Clear expression on needs and problems encountered Willing to take criticism Clear understanding of expectation, prioritize and work hard Keep communication lines open

  8. Department Head/Chair • Clear expectations, short and long term goals • Annual review specific on progress towards tenure and promotion • Equitable distribution of departmental resources • Graduate students • Space • Teaching load • Coordinate with mentor if possible
