LEGISLATIONS • FACTORIES ACT -1948 ( Safety in Manufacturing activity) • Act is in enforcement since 1881 and enforced by State Governments • Machine Guarding, • Specific provisions for certain operations such as Solvent Extraction Plants, Agro-chemicals • Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health • Exits, Illuminations etc.

  4. LEGISLATIONS • MANUFACTURE, STORAGE & IMPORT OF HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS -1989 (Under Environment Protection Act) • Quantity based approach in management of Hazards • Rules On-Site plans for installations having hazardous substances more than Threshold Quantities • Safety Report for Bulk Storages

Introduction to Global Harmonised Systems (GHS) • Our Country is a signatory to treaty concerning harmonisation of Labels under GHS • However presently practised system will undergo very minor changes under GHS • To have a unified and standardised approach Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India has initiated certain steps and has also established a dialogue with the industry.
