“Creativity to the neXt power” Step 5, 6, 7-Focus, Delegate & Prototype Acoustics Engineering Forensic and Criminology Engineering Applied Strategic Game Engineering Study of sound, optics, vibration and noise, how these are generated, their relationship to music and how they can be enhanced and suppressed. Involves Design and strategic decision making. It is the application of statistical and design principles. The investigation and analysis of criminal cases, as well as the reconstruction of failures in buildings, structures, vehicles, and other systems Define Research Brainstorm Vote Focus Delegate Prototype Test Refine Conclusions

“Creativity to the neXt power” • One survey designed for each group: • Prospective students • Family and friends • Employers 0.65 * (Prospective students) + 0.15 * (Family and friends) + 0.2 * (Employers) Define Research Brainstorm Vote Focus Delegate Prototype Test Refine Conclusions
“Creativity to the neXt power” Sample Survey Questions (Scale: 1 – strongly disagree, 7 – strongly agree) Students: When accidents or malfunctions happen, I am curious as to why and how. Employers: I believe there exists a sufficiently large market for the investigation and reconstruction of crimes and engineering failures. Family & friends: Well-designed games are important in a child’s development, both physically and mentally. Define Research Brainstorm Vote Focus Delegate Prototype Test Refine Conclusions

“Creativity to the neXt power” Option I- Failure Analysis The study of determining how and why entities (such as structures and vehicles) fail. Students will analyze material damage, mechanical failures and the reconstruction of crimes. • Lower Division • E45-Properties of materials • E36-Statics • E37-Dynamics • Upper Division • Civil Engineering • Mechanical Engineering • F&CE 125 Deformation and Fracture of Materials Define Research Brainstorm Vote Focus Delegate Prototype Test Refine Conclusions
“Creativity to the neXt power” Option II-Bio-Chemical Analysis The students learn the techniques to investigate evidence from DNA sequences, polymorphic proteins and enzymes and antigenic variants found in various body fluids and samples. • Upper Division • Chemical Engineering • Toxicology • Molecular and Cell Biology • Bio Engineering • Lower Division • Biology 1A • Biology 1B • Chemistry 3A Define Research Brainstorm Vote Focus Delegate Prototype Test Refine Conclusions
“Creativity to the neXt power” Option III- Computer Forensics Students will study data identification, recovery, despoliation, security, and validation. Graduates can apply these concepts to computer fraud, hacking, identity theft, and other electronic crimes • Lower Division • CS61A-Intro to Programming and Computer Science • CS61B-Fundamental dynamic data structures • CS61C-Operation of Digital Computers • Upper Division • Electrical Engineering • Information Mgmt. “Creativity to the neXt power” Comments of prototype “In my first year, I don’t feel that I am informed enough to help me decide on which specific area I want to pursue, so that I can take the prerequisites that I need to take”. - Andres (MCB) “I’m curious to hear from professionals in this field because I don’t know much about it”. - Natalie (ME) “Is Law Enforcement an Engineering practice?” - Dan (EECS) Define Research Brainstorm Vote Focus Delegate Prototype Test Refine Conclusions
“Creativity to the neXt power” Step 9-Refinements • A F&CE freshman seminar was added to give students an opportunity to explore the 3 F&CE options • The 4 sub-majors werereduced to 3 because investigation and • law enforcement were not considered engineering disciplines • A course in engineering ethics is now to be taken in the • second year instead of the fourth year. “Creativity to the neXt power” Conclusions • Survey: ask questions that a person cannot automatically say “yes” or “no” to. Creating a survey is not as easy as we thought. • “Persona” should also be given in the context of the user, employer and professor • During brainstorming, keep all ideas. After you eliminate an idea, it may still be used later on, specially after feedback. Define Research Brainstorm Vote Focus Delegate Prototype Test Refine Conclusions
