  3. National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) • In the field since 1957 • In-person household survey of non-institutionalized civilian population • Fielded by Census Bureau since 1957 • Microdata released annually online • Impact of budget limitations on NHIS  Impact on NCHS

  7. Bad effects of cost-cutting measures: • Lower precision of estimates • Lower data quality • Interviewers’ loss of work hours • Few new initiatives Good things we did anyway, e.g.: • Development of paradata: public release, analysis • Improvement of income & SSN questions

  8. Planning for the next redesign: ~2014 • Want more flexibility: change design when budget changes • Must develop new approach to listing: --Use of commercially-available address files --New technologies, e.g., car, camera, & GPS; remote sensing.

  9. Hope! • NCHS budget to increase by $11.1 million in FY2009 • Funding from Stimulus Plan projects???
