Preposition • A preposition is a word that shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word • By changing the preposition in a sentence, you can change the relationship of the words and the meaning of the sentence • Example: The Saint Bernard slept near my bed  The Saint Bernard slept under my bed Everything about the beach was great Everything except the beach was great

  3. Preposition • The noun or pronoun that a preposition relates another word to is called the object of the preposition • Examples: • The Saint Bernard slept near my bed Bed is the object of the preposition • Everything about the beach was greatBeach is the object of the preposition

  5. Compound Prepositions • Prepositions that consist of two or more words according to in place of as of in spite of aside from instead of because of next to by means of on account of in addition to out of in front of prior to

  6. Conjunction • A conjunction is a word that joins words or word groups

  7. Coordinating Conjunctions and but or nor for yet so Examples: • streets and sidewalks (two nouns) • on land or at sea (two prepositional phrases) • Judy wrote down the number, but she lost it (two independent clauses)

  8. Correlative Conjunctions • Pairs of conjunctions that join words or word groups that are used in the same way both…and not only…but also either…or neither…norwhether…or Examples: • We want to go not only to Florida but also to California • Either we will buy it now, or we will wait for the next sale

  9. Interjection • A word that expresses emotion and has no grammatical relation to the rest of the sentence Examples: ah hurrah uh-oh wow aha oh well yahoo boy-oh-boy oops whew yikes hey ouch whoa yippee
