Testing for Conductors and Insulators Using Electric Circuits By Georgeann Wright
A conductor is something that let’s heat and electricity go through it. Example: Think of a hot summer day. You set on a shiny metal slide. OUCH! It’s incredibly hot and burns the back of your legs.
Would you want to touch the sides of a boiling pot of water? Why or why not?
When we boiled water in a beaker, what did Mrs. Wright use to touch the beaker?
Hot pads, or pot holders are insulators. They insulate your hands from heat.
An insulator is something that DOES NOT let heat and electricity go through it easily. Example: If you slide down a plastic slide like on some playgrounds, it will feel warm but not burn you. Plastic is an insulator.
CONDUCTOR iNSULATOR
Electrons are negative charges that circle the nucleus of an atom. They can flow in a current through conductors and produce electricity.
An electric current is a constant flow of electrons through a circuit. Remember us, the ELECTRONS?
An electric circuit is a complete pathway of conductors that electrons, or a current flows through.
An switch is a device that turns on or turns off the current flow.
If the switch is closed, then the light bulb lights up. This is called a closed circuit.
If the switch is open, then the light bulb DOES NOT light up. This is called an open circuit.
Today we are going to use an electric circuit to see what materials are insulators and conductors.
Today we won’t be using switches. Instead, we will use the following:1) a battery holder2) 3 wires with alligator clips on the ends3) 1 bulb and bulb holder
