Edinburgh-Malawi collaboration • Three Scottish Government IDF-funded projects 2006 – present - circa £1m • Multi-professional – medicine, nursing, clinical officers • Multi-level - UG, PG and CPD • 5 major work streams: • Capacity Building mainly in digital content creation • Provision of existing Edinburgh electronic resources • Support for curriculum development and staff development • Infrastructure improvement • Online CPD recording system for Medicine initially Linked Projects: St Andrews (Guild); West of Scotland (McLachlan)

5. CURRENT PROJECT • e-Learning in Clinical Education – 3 years April 2010 – March 2013 - £399,024 • Project Director DD; Manager Prof Eric Borgstein • Main focus is nursing, but continued support for medicine and clinical officers

ACHIEVEMENTS - UG Medicine • Circa 400 Edinburgh and third-party resources available to CoM to support Y1 and Y2 – basic sciences and some clinical subjects • Good access for students and ‘local ownership’ essential • Work to date: • Catalogue of Edinburgh resources developed (May 2009) • Online Learning Resources Repository developed (May-Oct 09) • CMS with resources linked to teaching events (Nov 2009) • Academic Liaison Officers appointed Oct 2009 - ‘key staff’ • Learning Technologist (Ross) working in Blantyre (Oct-Dec 09) • Several Content Creation workshops (Articulate) – April 2009- May 2011 • Local staff development activities run by ALOs during 2010 • Parallel Curriculum and staff development activities

7. ACHIEVEMENTS - UG Nursing • Same set of 400 Edinburgh & 3rd party resources available to KCN • Already ~100 additional resources have been developed locally • Curriculum Management System designed, built and implemented for Y1 (2011) • Resources for basic sciences and some clinical subjects being linked • New server and 80 PCs now implemented • ~70 staff attended content creation workshops & locally-run training workshops • KCN ALO has been in post since 2009 • Parallel work with module leaders to create CMS and link appropriate resources

8. Achievements - Clinical Officers • Same set of 400 Edinburgh & 3rd party resources and resource catalogue will be made available to MCHS • Already some locally developed Articulate resources, quizzes, videos and virtual patients • New server and 20 refurbished PCs now implemented at MCHS • ~30 MCHS staff attended content creation workshops since 2009

CMS – PURPOSE • Provide course information that is relevant to staff / students • Timetable • Module information • News / Notice board • Discussions • Encourage student-centred learning by delivering learning resources in a context that is relevant to their curriculum • Easily editable by staff who are responsible for their teaching materials • Initially system will be intranet only – fast, reliable
