  2. The Target P2       I can interpret character: A. Motivating Force B. Beats C. Emotion D. Background

  3. Motivating Force • What the character primarily wants + what he is willing to do to get it

  4. Find the Motivating Force • What does the character do? • What does the character say? • What do other characters say about him/her? • What actions are suggested by the character’s lines? • What description does the playwright offer in stage directions? Based on 1-5, the characters wants…. by….

  5. Beats • Goals which build to the motivating force • Often one per scene or one per act

  6. Find the Beats 1. List the goals the character has which help him/her achieve the motivating force.

  7. Emotion • Shifts based on progress toward the motivating force • Shown via body language and voice

  8. Find the Emotion • For each beat, what emotion best fits the character? • How might the emotion shift at the end of the beat?

  9. Background • Actors envision an imaginary background to better interpret the character

  10. Find the Background • What might have happened to the character before the play which resulted in this motivating force?
