Weather and Climate • Weather: the condition of the air and sky at a certain time • Climate: the average weather of a place over many years • Altitude- as altitude varies, climate varies • 1 factor for weather: the angle of sun rays hitting the earth • Tropics: sun hits directly once a year so this area has a hot climate • Winds: they bring moisture and produce storms and humidity • Climates change as seasons change
Temperature • A measure of how hot or cold the air is • Temperature and precipitation: the two main ways to describe weather • Polar Zones: Cold, high altitudes, sun’s below horizon mostly • Tropics: Warm, low altitudes, sun hits directly most of time • SI unit of temperature is the Kelvin • Boiling Point is 373 • Freezing Point is 273
Climate Graphs • Curved Lines: show average temperature • Bars: average monthly precipitation (not just rain)
