Blackburn College is committed to helping you plan and make decisions about your future so that when you complete your studies you have the best chances of success in the job market. • Session Aim: • You will be able to identify how to prepare for an interview and how to promote your self and the skills you have. • Learning Outcomes: • By the end of the session you will be able to: • Help you to prepare for your first job interview • Enable you to understand the different interview processes • Help you to become more confident in presenting yourself to an employer • Know where to access further resources for employability support
In what situations would we need to have an interview? • A new job • A college course • University • Apprenticeship • Volunteering • Positions of responsibility in/out of school
Why do we need an interview? • For the College/ Employer to assess what you’re like – Style of dress, hygiene, attitude • To check what you know about the course/ job and if you have relevant experience and skills • To assess your personality. Will you fit in? • To assess your enthusiasm • Gives you the opportunity to look around, ask questions and sell yourself • To ensure fairness

Communication Interpersonal IT Leadership Problem Solving Time Management Team working Self-initiative Flexibility What Skills are employers looking for? • You should constantly be referring to what skills you have and how you’ve acquired them during your interview. • Be specific with real examples. Preparing a list of any relevant experience prior to interview will help you to have some examples ready.
Task: In your example what was the task you had to do? Situation: When and where did your example happen? • S. T. A. R. Action: What action(s) did you personally do to complete the task? Result: Were you successful? How do you know?
ACTIVITY 2 Look at the example interview question you have been given, how would you answer it using STAR?
ACTIVITY 3 What is the worst question you have been asked at interview?
Example Questions Please can you tell me about yourself? Why have you applied for this job? What do you know about our company? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Can you describe a time when….? How do you cope under pressure? What would you do if…..? How do you prioritise your workload? What would you say is your greatest achievement?
Questions you can ask What training and support will there be in the position? When can I expect to hear from you? How many people will I be working with? What are the plans for the future of the company/organisation? What do you enjoy most about working here? DO NOT ask questions about holiday or pay
Interview Basics Always shake hands when entering and leaving Arrive early Dress smartly Always ask questions at the end Thank the interviewer(s) for their time
Conclusions Enjoy being interviewed Make yourself memorable Think about your answers and body language Plan and do research before the interview (use the job descriptions to plan possible questions)
