Background Anubis was an extremely important god in Ancient Egyptian society. He was associated with the process of preparing the body for its crossover into the afterlife. He was the one who decided the final fate of the soul. Essentially he was the Lord of the Underworld aside from Osiris. He was so important in Egyptian mythology that the “head embalmer” wore a mask that looked like Anubis.
Use in Pop Culture Anubis has been used in several different pieces of entertainment. In the Yu-Gi-Oh series of cards and even a movie. He is used as the main villain although he is usually portrayed as a good character. Anubis was also used in other movies. Many statues of him can be seen in The Mummy series of films. These statues show how important Anubis was in Egyptian society. Anubis was used in the Digimon series as the one who determines the fate of a someone who has died. Another example is in the True Blood series. The airline that they use is called Anubis Airlines.
My Opinion • In my opinion Anubis has been used well in many of the pieces of entertainment in the recent years. Naming the airline in True Blood after him was a great idea. In Egyptian mythology he helped transport the dead which is exactly what the airline did in the show. Also, showing all the statues of him in The Mummy series shows the great importance he had in Egyptian society. • But they way he was used in the Yu-Gi-Oh was vastly different from anything else. He was used as an evil villain which is nowhere close to how he was in Egyptian mythology. • Out of all of the Egyptian gods. Anubis has been used more than all the others in pop culture. This shows just he much of a key character he was in history and still is today.
