In Spanish, the Direct Object Pronouns (D.O.P.) me, te, and nos refer to people whereas the 3rd person singular and plural forms (lo, la, los, las)  can refer to either people or things.   If they are referring to things, use the same gender as the name of the object being referred to. Juan tienelapluma. Juan has the pen. Ask the question what or whom in regards to the verb (qué/quién) : ¿Que tiene Juan? Now replace lapluma with the direct object pronoun la. Juan la tiene. Notice that if the subject of the sentence changes, this does not affect the direct object pronoun.

  8. However, if the direct object of the sentence changes to a masculine noun, the masculinepronoun must be used. Juan tiene el libro. = Juan has the book. direct object noun Juan lotiene. = Juan has it. direct object pronoun replaces the noun
