What Absolute Value ISN’T • Absolute Value is not just changing the signs inside the bars! |x-5| is not x+5 Prove that |x-5| ≠ x+5 • Absolute Value bars are like parenthesis but do not distribute into absolute value.
Absolute Value • Remember that absolute value measures the distance from a number to zero. • |x| = 4 means that x is 4 units from zero. What number can x be? • |x-5| = 0 means that the distance from x to 5 is 0. What number does x have to be? • |x-5| = 1 means that x is 1 unit from 5. What number can x be? • |x-4| = 5 means that x is 5 units from 4. What number can x be?
Solving Absolute Value Equations Graphically |x-h| = c • Draw a number line. • Label the center of the number line with the number being subtracted from x (h). Be careful with the sign… opposite of what you see (between the variable & the #) • Count “c” units from “h” in both directions. (C is how far x is from h in both directions left & right) • Always two solutions. Remember distance is both left and right from “h”.
Solving Absolute Value Equations Algebraically • Isolate the absolute value (move all numbers to the other side of the equation). • Remove the absolute value symbol by rewriting two equations. (One positive/One negative) • Solve each equation (always two answers).
P350 # 24-27 24. |x-5| = 8 25. |b+9|= 2 26. |2p-3| = 17 27. |5c-8| = 12 24. x=-3 & x=13 25. b=-11 & b=-7 26. p=-7 & p=10 27. c=- 4/5 & c=4
