People with Disabilities • 54 million Americans have a disability • That’s 1 in 5 • 1 in 8, 27 million, live with a severe disability • Disability is the one minority that anyone can join – and, over time, many will! • Data on the following charts is derived from the 1997 Survey of Income and Program Participation and the 2000 US Census

  5. Medical Technology • More people are surviving previously fatal accidents and illnesses.

  7. What the future holds… • From 2011 until 2020, each and every day10,000 more Americans will turn 65 • By the year 2020 one in every four persons will be 65 years of age or older. • Many of these individual will also have a disability.
