New Industries • The transcontinental railroad connected the two seas. It helped the nation move out west. • Oil and steel grew to staggering size and made millionaires along the way. • John D. Rockefeller-oilman • Andrew Carnegie-steel maker.
The growing sense of national self-confidence. • The spirit of individualism flourished. • Government began to play a bigger role with transportation systems, schools, hospitals, sanitation, police and fire departments. • Literature flowered as well as the golden age of philanthropy. • The American appetite for overseas expansion appealed to many citizens. Before the end of the century, the US was involved in another war-Spain 1898.
