Northern Europe Part 2- Ireland
Objectives • 1. Locate the countries and major cities of northern Europe. • 2. Locate the major physical characteristics in northern Europe. • 3. Identify the major industries of each region in northern Europe. • 4. Explain the causes of conflict in Ireland.
Northern Ireland • Northern Ireland- also known as Ulster • 2nd largest island in the British Isles • Protestant country however Ireland is Catholic • A land of rugged coasts and rolling hills; loughs- crystal lakes • Belfast- capital city and the largest • Industrial city known for shipbuilding • Aircraft construction is now part of the economy
Ireland • Massive glaciers created Ireland’s thin, rocky soil • Ireland’s climate is much warmer because of the North Atlantic Drift • The coast of Ireland is surrounded by mountains • Ireland ranks 6th in the production of zinc • In the Central and Western regions there are many bogs- water sits without access to the ocean • Here partly decayed moss has compressed and formed peat used for heating and cooking • English-Irish relations have been harsh • Over the centuries England has discriminated against Catholics in Ireland. • Once a law was in place preventing Catholics from buying or inheriting land • Ireland joined the UK in 1801. In 1921, the Anglo-Irish Treaty was negotiated, creating an Irish Free State. In 1949, the Republic of Ireland cut all ties with Britain. • Ireland once was a land of “poor farmers”. Now many people have factory jobs. One of the well known exports is Waterford crystal.
