  1. Five Types of Bariatric Surgery Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, is a great solution when you need something more than diet or exercise to lose excess weight. Not only does it help with weight loss, but it can also help with health problems like high blood pressure and many serious health complications. You may find yourself enjoying a life you never thought possible.

  2. 1. Gastric Sleeve • With this surgery, around seventy-five percent of your stomach is removed. What’s left of the stomach is sleeve-shaped, hence the name. Gastric sleeve surgery shrinks your stomach in order to quickly achieve a substantial amount of weight loss. Gastric sleeve decreases the hunger hormone (Ghrelin), as it is produced in high percentages on the removed part of the stomach, this offers a better control of what you will eat and help you take healthier and smarter choices when eating.

  3. 2. Gastric Bypass • A gastric bypass reduces the size of your stomach and reroutes food to go to your small intestines. During the operation, your stomach is divided in less than half. The surgeon will connect the upper part of the stomach directly to your small intestine. Doing this means less food and calories are taken in, making it easier to lose weight. Weight loss tends to happen quickly and dramatically within the first six months. This surgery enhances insulin efficiency and quality. Type 2 diabetes can be controlled satisfactorily, in some cases without medication.

  4. 4. Duodenal Switch Duodenal Switch Surgery is an excellent option for patients needing to lose a significant amount of weight. A large portion of the stomach (approximately 70%) is removed so that it resembles a tube or sleeve. The intestine is them rerouted so the body has less time to absorb calories and fat. This is accomplished by connecting the end of the large intestine to the first section of the small intestine, called the duodenum. 3. Gastric Band Also known as a lap-band, this procedure shrinks the stomach, making you feel full. The surgeon uses an inflatable band to split the stomach into two parts with a small pathway between them. It doesn’t take a lot of food to start to feel full. You can get the band adjusted afterward if you need it tightened or loosen. It’s probably the shortest and least invasive surgery.

  5. 5. Bariatric Revision Surgery • You probably won’t need this kind of surgery, but it’s good to know that it’s an option. A revision surgery helps correct or enhance the effects of previous weight-loss surgeries. You’d use this option if your previous operation failed, if there is weight regain years after previous surgery, secondary effects of previous surgery (such as acid reflux in sleeved or banded patients), or if there were complications. Complications can include things like ulcers, scar tissue building up, bone loss, band erosion, band slipped, twisted sleeve or losing the ability to absorb vitamins.
