  2. Early Life Born in France to a wealthy family Art and literature at Cambridge Love for photography in 1931

  3. Photography Career • Work shown in galleries • Introduced to film by Paul Strand • Worked with French filmmaker, but returned to photography

  4. Photography Career continued… • Made documentary on French prisoners • Photographed Mahatma Ghandi in India • Created a documentation of Ghandi’s life and it was published in Life Magazine • He created Magnum Photos in 1947

  5. Later Years • Published The Decisive Moment in 1952 • He documented the Spanish Civil War and the Chinese Revolution • Began drawing and painting • No longer talked about his work

  6. Later Years continued… • Fondation Henri Cartier Bresson in Paris • Died August 3, 2002 • Career lasted 45 years and his wife • He said: “In photography, the smallest thing can be a great subject. The little, human detail can become a Leitmotiv (leading motif)”
