  2. What is a sentence? • A group of words that expresses a complete thought. What is a sentence fragment? • A group of words that does not express a complete thought

How to tell a sentence from a sentence fragment Example: Jumped on the bed. • Step 1: Does the group of words begin with a capital letter and end with an ending punctuation mark? • Yes: Jumped • Yes: There is a period after bed. • Step 2: Do the words express a complete thought? • No: They do not name the person or people who jumped on the bed. • The group of words is a fragment.

  4. Rules to Remember • Sentences begin with a capital letter. • Sentences end with a punctuation mark • Sentences express a complete thought. • Fragments have a missing part. • Fragments do not express a complete thought
