  1. Phun with Photonics Berkeley IceCube Collaboration Meeting Michelangelo D’Agostino UC Berkeley March 20, 2005

  2. New Special Features • new flasher LED source option • new full flasher board source option, fully configurable from the steering file • hole ice cylinder simulation • full documentation can be found at amanda.berkeley.edu/~mdagost/photonics Michelangelo D'Agostino

  3. Flasher LED Source • photonics already supports an LED source as option #4 • photon direction is chosen from a cos distribution in zenith angle and uniformly in φ (relative to the LED source axis) Michelangelo D'Agostino

  4. Flasher LED Source • the flasher LED’s that are actually in the ice are considerably more beamed • the intensity is closer to Gaussian in  with a σ of around 14 degrees beamed flasher LED regular LED cos  Michelangelo D'Agostino

  5. Flasher LED Source • a new flasher LED source is available as source option #7 in the photonics steering file • it can be offset and rotated just like any other photonics point source 7 # Source type (1=isotropic, 2=cerenkov, 3=beamed, etc..) Michelangelo D'Agostino

  6. Full Flasher Board Source • I’ve also added a full flasher board source available as source option #8 • 6 horizontal LED’s and 6 LED’s tilted at 48 degrees • each LED can be turned on or off from an additional line in the steering file (existing steering files are unaffected) 8 # Source type (1=isotropic, 2=cerenkov, 3=beamed, etc..) 000000 111111 #Flasher board configuration (6 horiztonal and then 6 tilted, separated by a space) Michelangelo D'Agostino

  7. Full Flasher Board Source • 6 tilted LED’s only Michelangelo D'Agostino

  8. Full Flasher Board Source • view from above; very few up-going photons Michelangelo D'Agostino

  9. Full Flasher Board Source • 6 horizontal LED’s only Michelangelo D'Agostino

  10. Full Flasher Board Source • full board; fewer photons in the lower hemisphere Michelangelo D'Agostino

  11. Hole Ice Cylinder • we know quite a bit about South Polar ice (e.g. see Kurt’s famous unpublished ice properties paper) • unfortunately, to get strings in, we have to melt the pristine ice and let it refreeze • we expect the hole ice to be bubbly and more highly scattering • as of now, hole ice is taken into account through DOM sensitivity in the photonics efficiency file Michelangelo D'Agostino

  12. Hole Ice Cylinder • I’ve added an option to simulate a hole ice cylinder • only available for the full flasher board source • the cylinder can be turned on or off and it’s radius and effective scattering length can be adjusted from new lines in the steering file 1 # Hole ice cylinder-1 to turn on, 0 to turn off .3 # Radius of hole ice cylinder (m) .50 # Hole ice effective scattering length (m) Michelangelo D'Agostino

  13. Hole Ice Cylinder scatters in the hole ice Michelangelo D'Agostino

  14. Hole Ice Cylinder • I still need to investigate whether the hole ice cylinder has a measurable impact on, e.g. single string timing differences • I’ll investigate whether we can learn anything about the actual parameters of the hole ice from these as well Michelangelo D'Agostino
