Livers are pHun! Enzymes and pH
What the pHudge is pH? • The pH scale measures how strong an acid or a base is. • Any solution with a pH lower than 7 is an acid • Any solution with a pH higher than 7 is a base
The pH scale • Vinegar, coke, and stomach acid are strong acids • Baking soda, ammonia, and bleach are strong bases
But what is it really? • pH scale really measures the concentration of H+ ions vs. OH- ions
But what is it really? • H+ > OH- = acid • H+ < OH- = base
Enzymes • Enzymes lower the energy needed for a reaction to take place. • No enzymes = you die.
A mini puzzle • Enzymes are like puzzle pieces - they must fit exactly in order to work
