In response to Luther wrote the 95 Thesis which he tacked to the Castle church in Wittenberg. He invited people to debate them with him. • His thesis was copied down and taken to a printer. • Word spread quickly.
Highlights: • People could win salvation only by faith in God’s gift of forgiveness. (Good works) • All church teachings should be clearly based on the Bible. (Pope and church tradition didn’t count.) • All people of the faith were equal. (Didn’t need priests to intercede for them.)
Charles V is the Holy Roman Emperor (Controls German states) • Issues the Edict of Worms saying that no one can shelter or feed Luther.
Prince Fredric The Wise disobeys and Luther spends a year at his castle translating the NewTestament into intoGerman.
MEANWHILE… • Luther went back to Wittenberg and discovered that he had followers calling themselves Lutherans.
Peasants try to take advantage of the situation and revolt. • Luther sides with the princes. • Peasants feel betrayed. • Noble Princes get grand ideas and want to get of the Pope’s authority.
In 1529 Luther’s supporters signed a protest against the Catholic Church, thus becoming known as Protestants.
After a lot of fighting a peace treaty was signed that allowed each German prince to choose the religion of his state.
This opened a door for bigger countries to go against the Pope. The biggest of which was England.
