  8. On March 5th, 2007, a car bomb was exploded on al-Mutanabbi Street in Baghdad-the historic center of Baghdad bookselling – wounding more than 100 people and killing more than 30. Al-Mutanabbi Street has been the heart and soul of the Baghdad literary and intellectual community.

  9. Al-Mutanabbi Street starts in all of us: personally, in our communities, and in our nations. We seek to show the commonality between this small street in Baghdad and our own cultural centers, and why this attack was an attack on us all.

  10. Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here is also a conversationAt IUPUI Al-MutanabbiStreet Starts Here will be a series of three biennial symposiumsThe first will take place in the fall of 2014

  11. The library started gathering historical documents and personal effects from residents in 1996, and the collection had since grown to include everything from local social club records to the earliest known photos  of the town to information about Donald Morrison, a Lac-Mégantic resident and notorious 19th century outlaw. “The library is completely destroyed, including of course the collection. There is nothing left,” said Quebec Public Library Association Executive Director Eve Lagacé,

  12. “Some people see the glass half full. Others see it half empty. I see a glass that's twice as big as it needs to be.”

  15. Old Strategy • Balance attempt to absorb cuts • Slow reduction in clerical and hourly staff with slight increase in professional staff • Maintain school-dedicated portion of the materials budget

  16. New Strategy • Expenditures for staff will be maintained • The gradual shift from clerical and hourly to professional staff will continue • When necessary, budget cuts will be taken in the materials budget • Inside the materials budget school-dedicated funds will be reduced and funds to support core collection building and document delivery will be increased

  17. New Strategy What doesn’t change: • Focus on information literacy and research skills • Commitment to digital scholarship and research support • Library as place for non-classroom academic work • Community based digital projects

  18. New Collection Strategy Accelerate move from just-in-case to just-in-time provision of documents • Most important for science/technology journal articles • Books more (electronic and paper) purchased on-demand
