On Page 26 of your INB… • Divide page in half • For each half- pick a favorite meal, then list ingredients to make that meal • On the next page, use the chart to determine which side of the Columbian exchange your ingredients come from • Use Atlas on pg if you have issues reading the board • Was this dish possible before Columbus?

On page 27 of your INB • At the top: define Columbian Exchange • Use map in Atlas on pg to create exchanges chart (you have more room if you turn your book sideways) • Divide exchanges into categories: plants, animals, people, disease, ideas. • Which had the greatest impact on society? • Potatoes, corn, slaves, Christianity, horses, cows, pigs and smallpox

  6. Columbian Exchange- Disease • Smallpox, among other diseases such as measles, mumps, and chicken pox, killed between 80% and 90% of Native populations within the first 150 years of contact. In most regions colonized it was 100%. • This created a shortage of labor. • Where would the Europeans get labor from? • But first, why did they need labor?

  7. Environmental Impact • Largest industries- sugar cane farming and silver/gold mining • Required large amounts of timber- boiling sugar, melting silver/gold • Labor was hard and had high mortality rate • Needed a constant stream of labor to replenish those who died
