Capitalism • An economic system based on private ownership • Governments were no longer the sole owners of wealth • Joint Stock companies • A number of people combining their wealth for a common purpose • Investing in stocks • Mercantilism • Power equals wealth • Every country’s goal is to get wealth

  5. Mercantilism (cont.) • Balance of trade • Obtain gold and silver • Sell more goods than you buy • Which is known as a favorable balance of trade • Ultimate goal is to become self-sufficient • Helped along by colonization
