The Theory of Oomph… • As compared to Newton’s Law of Gravitation. • Vagueness is the enemy of successful communications. • Your mission: slay the dragon of vagueness with the sword of specificity.
Presentations Provide a Framework For — • Organizing knowledge for the benefit of others. • Motivating audiences to ask questions. • Building credibility as a subject-matter expert. • Publicizing your ideas/work.
Beginning your Preparation: 3 Essential Steps • Define your Purpose • Understand your Audience • Consider your Context
Define your Purpose • Identify why you are speaking. • Determine what to include based on this. • Organize your talk to showcase this purpose. • State your purpose at the beginning of the talk, and reiterate throughout.
Understand Your Audience • Who are they? • What do they know? • What do you want them to know? • What do you want them to do with the information?
Consider your Context • What type of presentation is it? • Who are you talking to? • How much time do you have? • What environmental factors are involved?
The Challenge with Audiences • Listening is hard work. • Too much or disorganized information hinders comprehension. • Listeners think faster than people can speak, so their minds wander while they listen (present company excepted). Solution:Before introducing new material, stop to remind your audience what they’ve learned so far.
Signs of Excellence:Graphics • Use simple, clear, accurate, and relevant graphics. • Use graphics to signal the organization of the presentation. • Don’t crowd your slides….simplicity is usually better.
Signs of Excellence:Delivery • Show enthusiasm for your project! • Don’t rush; maintain the pace of a typical conversation. • Build in pauses…..give your audience a chance to absorb what you are saying. • Make as much eye contact as you can. • Stop fidgeting. But consider moving around or using meaningful gestures. • Move your eyebrows!
