Family Life/ Influences and Inspiration • Duane Hanson was born in a small town from Minnesota called Alexandria. He then lived in a town of only about 700 that was known as Parkers Prairie. When he was thirteen he had created his first sculpture inspired by Gainsborough's portrait of a hansom young man wearing blue breeches. Using anything Duane could find in the house including his mothers butcher knife, or something laying around the farm he had carved blue boy out of soft wood. As a young boy, he was always interested in recreating the human form; with or without clothes. In the 1960’s pop artists were what inspired others because they were the first to develop new art forms based on images taken from “popular” culture, the Super Realists began working in the 1970’s. Duane was known as a Super Realist because of his very detailed life like sculptures.
