This is a model of the sculpture of Athena Parthenos by Phidias, which the Parthenon was built to house. The work was destroyed long ago, but ancient historians left detailed descriptions of it.
Another famous work, also long lost, by Phidias. This sculpture of Zeus Olympios was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and served as Horatio Greenough’s model for his sculpture of George Washington made in the 1840’s.
