What is a Volcano? • A volcano is mountain that that leads to a pool of molten lava below the surface of the earth. • A volcano consists of a magma chamber, main vent, and a crater.
Different types of volcanoes. • There are four main types of volcanoes. • Cinder Cone Volcanoes • Composite Volcanoes • Shield Volcanoes • Lava Dome Volcanoes
Where are volcanoes located? • Most Volcanoes are located where two of earths plates collide. • Most volcanoes are located in the Pacific Ring of Fire. • Over 75% of the world’s active volcanoes are here. • Nearly 450 volcanoes in a
What causes a volcano to erupt? • The earth’s core is extremely hot and it heats the magma. • When the magma gets really hot it begins to bubble. • This bubbling creates carbon dioxide gas that expands. • The expanding carbon dioxide gas creates pressure and pushes the magma up the vent of the volcano, causing an eruption.
Famous volcanoes • Mount St. Helens, Washington. • Still active volcano that is famous for its eruption on May 18, 1980. • Most deadliest and destructive volcano in US history. • 57 people died • 250 homes destroyed • 185 miles of highway destroyed • Krakatoa, Indonesia. • Erupted on May 27,1883. • Explosion was the loudest sound recorded in history. • Eruption generated a tsunami. • 36,417 people died • 164 villages destroyed • Thousands injured • 2/3rds of the island was destroyed
Impacts, effects, and damages caused by volcanoes • Results in hazards such as: • Pyroclastic flows- quickly moving gas, ash, and volcanic rocks that can kill people if they are caught in them. • Volcanic ashes- are like small sharp glass particles that can cut off the oxygen supply. • Lahars- mudflows from mixing ash and water that can carry large boulders and logs. It can topple and cover buildings and can result in crushing or drowning fatalities. • Lava flows- quickly moving and very destructive since they burn and bury everything they come in contact with. • Volcanoes can cause: • Landslides • Floods • Tsunamis • Loss of life • Destroys homes, communities, businesses, and the landscape • Economic decline • Destroys highways • Destroys bridges
Safety measures when volcanoes erupt • Follow evacuation orders and warnings. • Learn about community warning systems and evacuation plans. • Avoid low lying areas. • Seek shelter inside. • Close windows. • Prepare disaster kit that includes: • Breathing mask • Goggles • Evacuation supplies • Wear long sleeve shirts and pants. • Keep mouth and eyes covered. • Turn off car or truck engines if caught outside. • Listen to radio for latest emergency updates.
