  1. Mathematics 7

  2. Objectives At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to: • express real-life situation as integers; and • represents the absolute value of a number on a number line as the distance of a number from 0.

  3. Activity 1: The Opposites Give the opposite of the following.

  4. Long

  5. Pretty

  6. Hot

  7. Sunshine

  8. Dark

  9. Above

  10. Left

  11. Big

  12. Activity 2: Positive or Negative? Tell whether the following shows positivity or negativity.

  13. Stepping/Moving Forward

  14. Below Sea Level

  15. An Increase

  16. A Debt

  17. Withdrawal of Money from Savings Bank

  18. Integers Integers are set of opposing numbers.

  19. Positive Integers: integers located at the right side and/or above the number line. These are greater than 0. Negative Integers: integers located at the left side and/or below the number line. These are less than 0. The farther they are from 0, the lesser their value. Zero: the neutral number, the starting point in the number line

  20. Integers in Real Life Positive Negative Below Under Drop Demerit Decrease • Spend • Withdraw • Down • Above • Increase • Merit • Gain • Receive • Deposit • Up

  21. Integers in Real Life 20 • 20-pound weight gain • Lose 7 points on an exam • Spend 100 pesos • Loss of 4 votes • A drop in temperature of 16°C • 4 steps forward -7 -100 -4 -16 4

  22. Integers and their Absolute Value Absolute Value: the distance of the given number on the number line from 0. It disregards the direction from where it lies with respect to zero. It is denoted by |n|.

  23. Do you have any questions?

  24. Represent the following as an integer. • 14 ft above sea level • 5 steps to the left • A debt of Php 30 • Weight gain of 3 kilos • A salary decrease of Php 500

  25. Represent the following as an integer. • A merit of 10 points • A discount of Php 50 • A loss of Php 1000 • Drop of 10°C • Going down by 3 floors

  26. Plot the following on a number line and give the absolute value. • A = 10 • B = -2 • C = -8 • D = 5 • E = 8 • F = -1 • G = -5 • |-1| + |-5| • |8| + |2| • -|-5|

  27. Two buses, A and B, left the station at the same time and travelled at different speed in opposite directions. After one hour, bus A was 20 kilometers to the left of the bus station and bus B was 24 kilometers to the right of the station. Represent the given information in absolute values and find the distance between bus A and bus B.
