Athens • Birth place of democracy • Ordinary men of Athens could help make important decisions, like whether or not to go to war • Slaves, women, children and foreigners were excluded
Considered center of literature, philosophy and the arts • Home to Aristotle, Plato and Socrates • Known as the cradle of Western Civilization
Corinth • Gateway between Northern and Southern Greece • Lots of trade • Many ships went through Corinth because it was the quickest way between West Asia and Italy
Gained wealth from pottery made for perfume • Home of Isthmian Games, which were much like the Olympic Games
Sparta • Most dominant military power in the region • And because of this, Sparta was often cited as the head military force of Ancient Greece
Militarily centered, boys left their homes at the age of 7 to begin training • Were sent to live in dormitories • Did not learn to read, write, do math or play music—instead they learned to exercise, use spears and use swords • To make them tough, their teachers never gave them enough food, clothing or blankets
Greek Olympic Games • Was a religious festival to honor the Greek Gods Zeus and Hera • Called the Olympic games because the place was called Olympia, Elis, Greece • Held every four years
When it was time for the games, truces were declared across Greece, no matter whom you were at war • Men competed, judged and were spectators—women were not allowed • Only freemen who spoke Greek could participate
