FIRE RESPONSE • HOW TO RESPOND TO A FIRE IN YOUR AREA • FOLLOW THE ACRONYM, E S C A P E • E= EVALUATE • S = SECURE THE AREA – Remove occupants • C = CLOSE THE DOORS TO CONTAIN THE FIRE • A = ACTIVATE THE FIRE ALARM – using the hallway pull station • P = PHONE THE DESIGNATED EMERGENCY NUMBER • TUHSC – 55555; Uptown Campus – 5200; TNPRC – 0 and 6210, Hebert Center, and other locations – 911 • E = EXTINGUISH THE FIRE – using a portable fire extinguisher

  3. FIRE RESPONSE • EVACUATION • LEAVE THE BUILDING BY USING THE NEAREST EXIT • REMAIN A SAFE DISTANCE FROM THE BUILDING – AT LEAST 100 FEET AWAY DEPENDING ON THE SIZE OF THE FIRE • DO NOT BLOCK ENTRANCES OR EXITS

  4. FIRE RESPONSE • EVACUATION (cont’d) • REPORT TO A PREDESIGNATED AREA • DO NOT REENTER THE BUILDING OR AREA UNTIL THE “All Clear” SIGNAL HAS BEEN GIVEN BY POLICE OR EMERGENCY RESPONSE STAFF.

  5. FIRE RESPONSE • EMERGENCY RESPONSE STAFF • TO INCLUDE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, PUBLIC SAFETY, FACILITIES SERVICES, OEHS • DO NOT INTERFERE • FOLLOW THEIR INSTRUCTIONS

  6. FIRE SUPPRESSION • PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS - KNOW THEIR LOCATION • Mounted on the walls in the hallways, laboratories, air handling rooms, equipment rooms, etc. • Spaced so that the travel distance is within • 50 feet for areas with flammable and combustible liquids • Other areas: 75 feet

  7. FIRE SUPPRESSION • Before Using A Fire Extinguisher • Make sure you have an unobstructed escape route at your back • Fire should be small, confined and not spreading, e.g. trash can fire • Know that the extinguisher is right for the job • Be trained on how to use an extinguisher

  8. FIRE SUPPRESSION • PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS – To use them, remember PASS • Pull the pin • Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire • Squeeze the handle, and • Sweep the fire from side to side

  9. FIRE SUPPRESSION • REMEMBER • YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO FIGHT A FIRE USING A PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHER. • WHEN IN DOUBT, DON’T ATTEMPT TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE • EVACUATE!

  10. Fire Extinguisher Classifications sodium, magnesium, zirconium, potassium, titanium, lithium HALLWAY FIRE EXTINGUISHERS ARE OF THE ABC, DRY CHEMICAL TYPE. OTHERS MAY BE OF THE BC, CARBON DIOXIDE TYPE. A FIRE EXTINGUISHER CONTAINING WATER WOULD BE CLASS A.

  12. DEPARTMENTAL SAFETY REPRESENTATIVES • PLEASE TRAIN UNIT MEMBERS ON FIRE SAFETY USING THIS MATERIAL • TRAINING METHODS • COPY AND DISTRIBUTE MATERIAL TO UNIT PERSONNEL • USE POWER POINT PRESENTATION TO UNIT PERSONNEL • PROVIDE CLASSROOM TRAINING IF PREFERRED • DISCUSS AT A UNIT MEETING
