Legacy What do rain water, tree leaves, and too much free time have to do with a multi-generational legacy?
Warm-Up Question • What kind of family legacy does the world aspire to? • In 1923 the cost of a postage stamp in the Weimar Republic of Germany was: • 50,000,000,000 Mark • In post-WWII Hungary: • 41,900,000,000,000,000 % Inflation • Prices doubled every 13 ½ hours
Warm-Up Question What do you want said of you three generations from now? What are you doing now to achieve your goal?
Generation-Spanning Faith Let’s talk about getting your boat in order establishing your own faith and passing it along to your children as a legacy that will bless them and countless multiples that they encounter.
I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. 2 Timothy 1:5
Timothy’s Faith • Timothy’s mother was a Jewess and a believer. His father was Greek. • (Acts 16:1) • At an early age, Timothy embraced is mother and grandmother’s faith and became “wise for salvation.” • (2 Timothy 3:15)
Spanning Generations • Timothy’s faith is at least the third generation of its kind in his family. • This faith was: • Convincing • Consistent • Contagious • Confident
Convincing Faith How can you convince someone of your faith? “Sincere” or “genuine” from 2 Timothy 1:5 renders “without hypocrisy.” Religious rituals will have an impact on your children, but how you conduct yourself in seemingly random moments and circumstances will be just as impactful.
Convincing Faith • Your children are watching your walk with Christ in all kinds of weather. • Aside from avoiding sticking our spiritual foot in our mouth, what positive things can we do? • “We need to model a thirst for Jesus.” • Jorie Kincaid
Consistent Faith • Paul said Timothy’s faith “dwelt” in his grandmother and mother. • Staying power. • Permanence. • A house with someone living in it.
And what agreement hath a temple of God with idols? for we are a temple of the living God; even as God said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 2 Corinthians 6:16 (ASV)
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts unto God. Colossians 3:16 (ASV)
Contagious Faith • “A Christian is a man lost in wonder, love, and praise, at what God has done for him, and aflame with passion to tell others what God can do for them.” • William Barclay • “Timothy was raised in such a way that he could suck in godliness with his mother’s milk.” – John Calvin
But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you. You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 3:14-15 (NLT)
