Introduction • Polyembryony is the phenomenon of two or more embryos developing from a single fertilized egg (in humans, identical twins). • Polyembryonyoccurs regularly in many plants and animals. • E.g parasitoid insects • Discovered by Leeuwenhoek – 1979 In citrus aurantium . • Coined by Braun 1859. • It is main observed in gymnosperms than angiosperms.
Classification • 1. True polyembryony- • Two or more embryos arising in same embryo sac from zygote • E.g Citrus • 2. False polyembryony • Development of embryos in more than one embryo sac in same ovule or placenta. • E.gLoranthaceae family
According to genetic basis • 1. Gametophytic - Arising from any gametic cell of embryo sac after or without fertilization. • 2. Sporophytic – Arising from zygote or initial sporophytic cells of the ovule.
Causes According to Frusatoet al 1957 Factors causes polyembryony • Age of the tree ; increasing in older trees • Fruit set ; higher in years have higher fruit set. • Nutrional status of plant; decreasing with reduced food supply. • Orientation of the branch of tree
