4.5.13*If you were absent yesterday, see me NOW!! • Which organelle in the diagram is responsible for packaging and delivering contents within and outside of the cell? • Which organelle in the diagram is responsible for using light energy to produce food and oxygen? What is that process called? • Give an example of a homozygous recessive genotype using the letter A. • What is the difference between a renewable and nonrenewable resource? Give an example of each.
8.16.13 Quiz Day!! • Get your ENB and find a seat. • Using your ENB, complete your first Friday Quiz! • Work independently and SILENTLY. • When finished, turn quiz over and close ENB. a. Read a book, draw a picture, work on HW, something SILENT!
8.19.13 • Bellringers begin today!! • Get your ENB, get out a pencil, and await further instructions!!!
Bellringers • Given a sheet with all three days for week. Keep in ENB until Friday! • ONLY do the questions for the DAY assigned please!! • Use test taking strategies to answer • Underline key words • Eliminate wrong answers • Draw pictures to help • Use your textbook if you need to! • When finished, read a book or work on something silently. • We will go over answers as a class each day – it is your job to correct yours and get the right answer! • Turn in on Friday to get credit! • If it is completed correctly, you get points!! • Keep completed BRs in binder with quizzes and tests.
8.20.13 • Get ENB. • Open to graph for Friday Quiz Progress. • Get a utensil to fill it in. • Wait for further directions :o)
What is this all about?? • Think about our current unit and THIS VIDEO to try to determine what those beans represent! • Resources are RENEWABLE and NONRENEWABLE! Which bean represented which type of resource? How do you know? • Finish question 4 in your analysis.
Serious Issues… • Cups were 90% NONRENEWABLE (brown) and 10% RENEWABLE (black). This represents our CURRENT use of resources! • Is this a good thing???
More Issues… • At a CONSTANT rate we are good (Task 1)! But at an INCREASING rate, we are in trouble (Task 2). • Is our world using resources at a CONSTANT or INCREASING rate?
Which Would You Pick? • As Americans, are we consciously picking the better options? The RENEWABLES?? • Or are our EYES CLOSED (what you did!) as we carelessly use resources??
Quick Check! • On the lined paper UNDER your data, quickly write your own definition for the following terms: • Natural Resource • Renewable Resource • Nonrenewable Resource
Energy Resources • Natural Resource – natural material used by humans • Renewable Resource – a natural resource that can be replaced at the same rate it is used • Nonrenewable Resource – A resource that forms at a rate that is much slower than the rate at which it is used • Which type do we currently rely on most as humans?? Is this a good thing??
Task: Alert the President! Write a short facebook post to President Obama warning him of the dangers we are facing as a society if we continue to use resources the way we are. Be sure to TAG the following words: renewable, nonrenewable, and resources. Add a # at the end with one word describing your overall feeling about our situation (ex: scared, optimistic, worried, etc).
Alternative Energy Resources • We rely on FOSSIL FUELS like petroleum, coal, and natural gas • BUT THEY ARE RUNNING OUT AND RUINING OUR PLANET!! • So what do we do???? • Find an ALTERNATIVE!!! Like RENEWABLE energy!
Your Job: Investigate the Options! • Using Graphic Organizer we created, define fossil fuels and the 6 types of alternative energy sources. *Use Chapter 18 Section 2 and 3 in your textbook *1 - Fossil Fuels, 2 - Solar Energy, 3 - Hydroelectric, 4 - Geothermal,5 - Biomass, 6 - Wind Energy, 7 - Nuclear Energy • Add the pictures – make them pretty!! • Watch the videos for extra information! • Begin filling in the PROS and CONS if you have time.
To Do • Finish PROS/CONS list • Write Some Report Cards!!! • Create 2 report cards for 2 alternative energy resources. Assign them categories (ex: pollution, cost, efficiency, etc.) and give them a grade A-F. Add a comment for each grade explaining why they received it. Must have at least 4 categories per resource. • Example: Biomass (source) Land Use (category) D (grade) Biomass is a little greedy with his land use for growing the materials, and that land could be better used to grow food to feed the people. Please speak with Biomass about his tendency to take over things. (Comment) • Begin Review on back.
Exit Ticket 4.9 • Which type of alternative energy resource would be the best for people living in the Sahara Desert? • What is one problem with hydroelectric power? • What is one advantage of nuclear power? • In your opinion, which type of alternative resource is the best??? Give one reason why!
4.10.13 HW OUT!! • Numbers 11-15 in TCAP Workbook. • Which wave to the right would make the loudest noise? How do you know? • Using the Punnet Square to the right, what is the probability that the offspring will inherit a purebred (homozygous) genotype?
4.11.13 Have any finished homework out!! • Numbers 16-20 in TCAP workbook – these are hard today! Be careful!! • Using the graph to the left, which country uses the most coal? • Using the graph to the left, which country uses the most alternative energy resources? • How does an igneous rock transform into a metamorphic rock?
Exit Ticket 4.11Complete on bottom of green handout • Why wouldn’t you want to use wind power in Clarksville, Tennessee? • What is measured when looking at hydropower potential? • What is one type of NONRENEWABLE resource? • Which type of renewable resource comes from organic matter?
