  2. Have you ever thougt…. • I can’t find my….notes, homework, etc… • I can’t remember what we did in class yesterday… • I’m sure it’s in ….mom’s car, my back pack… • I was absent yesterday, what did I miss….

  3. GET IT TOGETHER WITH YOUR…. Interactive Student Notebook

  4. WHAT IS AN INTERACTIVE STUDENT NOTEBOOK? • A personalized textbook • A working portfolio –all of your notes, essays, worksheets, class work, quizzes – in one convenient spot!

  5. Purpose • To be a creative, independent, and reflective thinker and writer throughout the year. • To express your own ideas and process and/or apply the information and skills learned in this class.

  6. Left side / right side Student Response Teacher Input

  7. RIGHT SIDE • The RIGHT side belongs to Miss A. • The RIGHT side has all “testable” information • Date • Title and unit pages • Vocabulary • Class, reading, and discussion notes • Worksheets • table of contents • Study guides • Quizzes • Targets • Other relevant information

  8. RIGHT SIDE • Should be completely done. • Title, date, page numbers on each page. • All assignments should be in chronological order. • All RIGHT side assignments must be done only on RIGHT sides unless otherwise instructed by Miss A. • Each RIGHT side assignment receives a grade. • Any missing part (date, title. incomplete, etc…) will cause points to be deducted.

  9. EXAMPLES OF RIGHT SIDE ASSIGNMENTS • Articles • Notes, vocabulary terms • Graphic organizers and think sheets • In-class assignments • Essays, writing assignments • Handouts

  10. EXAMPLE OF RIGHT SIDE NOTES

  11. LEFT SIDE • LEFT side is to record YOUR thinking, reflections, questions, thoughts, impressions, connections, words, and wonderings. • The LEFT side belongs to YOU. • All must pertain to the task on the RIGHT side.

  12. Ideas for left side • Graphs, charts, Venn diagrams, research from Internet, draw pictures • Make connections between new and old learning • Questions • Poems, songs • Brainstorming • Sketches related to learning • Mnemonic devices

  13. EXAMPLE OF LEFT SIDE Brain Map

  14. Example of left side Chart

  15. Example of left side Worksheet

  16. Student materials • Spiral notebook – you will need a new one each quarter • Colored pencils, markers, crayons • Glue stick • Safe scissors • Highlighter

  17. Maintaining ISN • No ripped out pages or torn corners • No doodling that doesn’t relate to learning • Date, title, and number EACH page

  18. YOU WILL NEED a new notebook each quarter

  19. Deductions • If you forget to bring your notebook when a check is announced, you may bring it in the very next calendar day. However, a letter grade will be deducted from your notebook score for that check. • Any left side assignment that is found out of chronological order will be reduced 10% in the overall score of your notebook evaluation. • ALWAYS HAVE YOUR NOTEBOOK!

  20. GRADING OF ISN • Each time a notebook is evaluated it is weighted as a test grade. • Notebook checks are unannounced and can occur at any random time during the school year.

  21. How long should it take? • Normal class time is given to work on RIGHT side assignments and sometimes includes enough time to work on a LEFT side. You are expected to revisit the RIGHT side that evening and review the material by completing a LEFT side activity of your own choosing. • Once you have a good understanding of the kinds of LEFT side activities that can be done, it should take you about 15 minutes to complete a LEFT side.

  22. Initial set up • The notebook should have been set up following the directions given by Miss A. in class. • The Table of Contents must be updated regularly and will be checked during each notebook check. • Any missing or incomplete part of these directions will cause a deduction in the overall evaluation grade each time the notebook is evaluated.

  23. Table of Contents AssignmentDate Keep track of each assignment we do…

  24. Cover • Use photos, clippings, markers, glue, paper, and scissors, etc., to decorate the cover of your Interactive Student Notebook as if it were the cover to the book that tells the story of YOUR life thus far.
