How do you ensure that students cannot see sensitive data? • Do you have a medical/dental school associated with your establishment? • Do you do sales that require credit cards? • Would you like to provide fast secure access to residents and students throughout the campus? • Would you like adjuncts, guest speakers, etc to have their own access? • Would you like to be able to enable secure access for student guests?
Who makes the rules? The 802.11 Standard Modulation and Data Rate • 802.11a • 802.11b • 802.11g • 802.11n • 802.11ac • Security • 802.11i • 802.11w • Roaming • 802.11r • 802.11k A little 802.3 Power Over Ethernet (PoE) • 802.3af • 802.3at • Quality of Service (QoS) • 802.11e Product Interoperability
A word about 802.11ac • 3x3:3 Radios • 256 QAM • 80 MHz Channels • 4x4:3 or 4x4:4 radios • Standards based TxBF • MU-MIMO • Up to 8x8:8 • 160 MHz Channels 1st Generation 2 nd Generation Too early to know
The Goal of 802.11ac Most of all, though, it’s for 802.11ac clients!
802.11ac Channel Bonding Adds benefits to single stream devices! Primary 20 MHz channel = 60 Primary 40 MHz channel = 60 & 64 Primary 80 MHz channel = 52, 56.,60 & 64 • For example: • Station wants to send 80 MHz frame, but station 52 is in use by neighboring AP • Receiver refuses transmission, and drops back to 40 MHz Primary 80 MHz channel = 36, 40, 44, 52, 56.,60 & 64 • Station listens to be sure that all stations on primary channels are clear, then sends the widest frame it can • If all frames aren’t available, backs down to next smaller frame group
QAM In phase = 0 In phase = 0 180 out of phase = 1 Binary Phase Shift 16 QAM 4 levels of amplitude & 4 phase shifts Each point has 4 characters, from 0000 to 1111
256 QAM in Wave 1 of 802.11ac 802.11n When the EVM is too large, transmission drops down to the next largest 802.11ac
802.11ac roll out recommendation (Consider Client mix) *Deploy first generation 802.11ac in high-density client deployment area such as big conference rooms, auditoriums, lecture halls, student unions and other large spaces.
Let’s talk about the client side What to look for? What types of clients do they have? The state of the switching infrastructure (Power & Ports) http://certifications.wi-fi.org/search_products.php
