Monday, December 9th Entry Task Write out each definition and match it with the correct term. • Huge landmass in which all continents were once joined • Hypothesis that Earth’s continents were once joined in a single landmass and gradually moved apart • Theory that Earth’s lithosphere is made up of huge, moving plates that are carried around the planet by motions in the mantle. Terms: Pangaea, sea-floor spreading, plate tectonics, continental drift Schedule: • Convection Currents Lab Homework • Complete Lab Packet • 6.1 and 6.2 Quiz tomorrow DO NOT TOUCH THE LAB SUPPLIES Objective: I can understand how convection currents move Earth’s plates • Please Have on Desk: • 6.2 RSG • Chapter 6 vocabulary
Tuesday, December 10th Entry Task Write down a paragraph that explains how movement in the mantle causes the tectonic plates to move. Include all important information from 6.1 and 6.2. Review: Answer the following questions using full sentences, IQIA. • Igneous rocks contain silica. If an igneous rock has a high amount of silica, will it be light or dark in color? • What type of mining is open pit mining? (surface, mountain, deep, lava) Schedule: • 6.1 and 6.2 Quiz • 6.3 Read/RSG • 6.4 Read/RSG Homework: • Complete readings/RSGs • Objective: • I can understand what happens when plates move apart • I can understand that plates converge or scrape past each other
Quiz Review- You should know... • The layers of the earth • Order (location, if lithosphere or asthenosphere what they are exactly) • Properties- composition, density, temperature, thickness • Hypothesis of continental drift- what it is and what it was based off of • Theory of plate tectonics- what it is and what supports it • Convection- what it is, how it makes the mantle move, what happens because of it • Any and all vocabulary terms
Wednesday, December 11th Entry Task Review Questions! Answer the following questions using full sentences, IQIA. • What type of rock is Limestone? (hint-it forms when water evaporates and leaves behind minerals) • Why are landforms that are made of igneous rock long lasting? Schedule: • Bill Nye- Earth’s Crust Homework: • 6.3 Review Questions- page 204 #1-6, FS, IQIA Please have on Desk: • 6.3 and 6.4 RSG • Objective: • I can understand important information about Earth’s crust
Thursday, December 12th Entry Task Answer the following questions using full sentences, IQIA. • Name the 3 types of plate boundaries. • Where do most divergent boundaries occur? • Why does one plate sink beneath another at a subduction boundary? • What is the main plate motion at a transform boundary? Schedule: • 6.3 and 6.4 notes Homework • 6.4 review questions, page 212 #1-6 - FS, IQIA • 6.3 and 6.4 Quiz tomorrow • Objective: • I can understand what happens when plates move apart • I can understand that plates converge or scrape past each other • Please have on desk: • 6.3 review questions
What is a Plate Boundary? • A plate boundary is where the edges of two plates meet. • There are 3 types of boundaries: • Divergent • Convergent • Transform
I. Divergent Boundaries • Occur where plates move apart. Most divergent boundaries are found in the ocean.
Divergent Boundaries • In the ocean, divergent boundaries are also called spreading centers. • Mid-ocean ridges mark the sites where the ocean floor is spreading apart. • As the ridges continue to widen, a gap called a rift valley forms.
II. Convergent Boundaries • Occur where plates push together. • There are 3 types of convergent plate boundaries.
Convergent Boundaries • Continental-continental collision: • Occurs where 2 plates carrying continental crust (same density) push together. • If the plates keep moving, their edges crumple and fold.
Convergent Boundaries 2. Oceanic-oceanic subduction: • Occurs where one plate with oceanic crust sinks, or subducts, under another plate with oceanic crust. • Deep-ocean trenches and island arcs form.
Convergent Boundaries 3. Oceanic-continental subduction: • Occurs when ocean crust sinks under continental crust. • Deep-ocean trenches and coastal mountains form.
III. Transform Boundaries • Occur where plates scrape past each other in opposite directions.
Friday,December 13th Entry Task Write down the big idea of the chapter Write out the key concepts for each chapter Write down one important fact from each section. Review: answer using FS, IQIA. 1. True or False? Formation of a mountain range is an example of a process that causes metamorphic change over large areas. Schedule: • 6.3 and 6.4 quiz • Chapter 6 Review Homework: • Chapter 6 Book Review • Chapter 6 Test TUESDAY!!! Objective:I can understand important information about plate tectonics • Please Have on Desk: • 6.3 and 6.4 review questions
Chapter 6 review- do on a separate piece of paper • Page 215-216 • #1-31 • For Questions 1-6 • Do a magnet word diagram for each term.
