Overview Objective: PA expansion, conservation outside PAs, SFM/SLM Components: Legal/policy reform; PA expansion; capacity building; PA financing; marketing biodiversity; SFM/SLM Approach: Strong emphasis on community-based approaches and inter-sectoral co-ordination
Current Status Timetable Approved: Inter-sessional Work Programme January 2009 CEO Endorsement: June 2009 (PIF) – extended to December 2009, another extension will be required. Current status: Fieldwork: Consultations and fieldwork for project development completed by Nov 2009 Project document: Complete project document ready for submission to GEF Tracking tools: Tracking tools drafted, need final validation in countries Cofinancing: Some cofinancing letters still required Bottom line: Ready to submit when cofinancing is secured
Constraints and challenges Tracking tools: Countries still have major problems understanding the tracking tools and collecting some of the information required FAO has helped them to complete the tools Cofinancing: Adequate cofinancing has been promised, but it has still been difficult to obtain some of the cofinancing letters. Some partners have indicated that they must get clearance from their headquarters (which will take time). FAO is working with partners to secure the cofinancing letters

Coral Triangle Fishery Dimensions • 363 million people • 120 million dependent on marine resources for livelihoods, food security • Healthy coral reefs support $12 billion/year tourism industry • Healthy reef systems protect communities from storms, reducing damage and reconstruction costs
Threats to the Coral Triangle • Overfishing for food, ornamentals, curios • Destructive fishing methods (cyanide, blast) • Increasing human populations (growth, migration) • Unsustainable fishing methods • Loss of critical habitats • Land-based sources of pollution • Climate change impacts
