Introduction • In any protected area there are many important resource values • Field reconnaissance and information gathering should generate list of resource values • Our focus in this sub-topic is exceptional resource values • These resources are not confined into the boundaries of the protected areas.

  3. Criteria to identify the exceptional resource values • Outstanding natural, scenic, geological, ecological, floral, faunal and recreational values of what the protected area was created; • Unique biological attributes, vegetation types, and landform; • Areas essential for protecting the ecological integrity; • Critical areas maintaining water flow and quality; • Rare and endemic plants and animals;

  4. Criteria to identify the exceptional resource values cont… • Sensitive, threatened or endangered plants and animals; • Resources usually sensitive to human use; • Major archaeological or historical sites; • Major local cultural sites and • Resources with worldwide recognition

  5. Essence of Exceptional Resource Values • Used in many different stages of planning • It captures the essence of why the area is created and still exist • These resources must be must be protected and preserved to maintain its significance • Thus, it allows planners, managers and decision makers to focus their efforts, limited resources and staff on most important resources • In planning process they are integral to determine the area purpose and significance • Sets the parameters for developing management zones
