ATHENS, OUR CITY Athens is one of the world’ s oldest citiesandhas been continuously inhabited for at least 7000 years with a recorded history spanning around 3.400 years. Classical Athens of the 5th century dominated the Greek world and apart its economic and military power, developed the arts and philosophy in such point that is considered as the cradle of the western civilization and the birthplace of democracy. Socrates, Plato, Aristoteles, the tragic poets Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, the historians Herodotus and Thucydides, and a wide range of philosophers, poets and artists lived and became famous in the «Glorious City» (κλεινόν ἄστυ) ofthe goddess Athina.
Athens is the capital of Greece since 1834, after the War of Independence and the creation of the modern Greek state. Nowadays, the Athens Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) is the 7th most populous LUZ in the European Union (the 4th most populous capital city of the EU), with a population of 4,013,368 (in 2004). Athens is also the southernmost capital on the European mainland.
AGhIOI ANARGIROIour neighbourhoodAghioiAnargiroi, named after the same church, is a relatively new district. In ancient years the region was part of the Great Olive Grove of Athens. An olive tree behind the church (Peisistratos olive tree) is what remains of that ancient olive grove. It is more than 2500 years old and a natural monumentIn early 20th century only 10 houses are recorded. in the area there are cultivated fields, which belong to members of the Athenian high class. The solid group of inhabitants that came from the island of Mykonos has given the name of the area where our school is located (Mykoniatika).
During the first three decades the population grows . Families from the islands of Andros, Naxos, Mykonos, Tzia and refugees from Smirna and Asia Minor, after the expulsion of 1922 settle down in the area together with inhabitants from Peloponese,Eptanisa and …Bielorussia! After the war the area loses its agricultural character and after the civil war, during the 50s and 60s, becomes an important destination for internal immigration. Today the population is around 60.000 habitants.
MEN WATCHING THE TRAINS PASSING BY… The train rail divides the area into two districts. In reality this suburb flourished along the rails which define its life and development. Today two stations of the suburban railway are located here: AghioiAnargiroi and PirgosVasilisis.
THE TRITSIS PARK At the northern borders of the municipality lays the biggest urban park of Greece: The «Εcological Sensitization park of AntonisTritsis». Originally hosting the royal fields of queen Amalia of Bavaria, the property passed into private interest since 1870. There are enough elements reminding this period of time. Among them, of course, the Tower of Queen Amalia, the royal mansion replacing an older tower. This building is a speciment of Gothic architecture, after the HohenSchwangau tower where King Otto of Bavaria (the first King of modern Greece) was born.
