  1. Grammar Link Verbs, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections are five of the eight parts of speech The following slides provide brief definitions and examples.

  2. VERB • A verb is a word that expresses action or state of being. • EXAMPLE: Grendel slowly stirs in his murky and vile lair.

  3. ADVERB • An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. • EXAMPLE: Grendel slowly stirs in his murky and vile lair.

  4. PREPOSITION • A preposition is a word that introduces a phrase and shows a relationship between the noun or pronoun in the phrase and some other word in the sentence. • EXAMPLE: Grendel slowly stirs in his murky and vile lair.

  5. CONJUNCTION • A conjunction is a word that joins words or groups of words. • EXAMPLE: Grendel slowly stirs in his murky and vile lair.

  6. INTERJECTION • An interjection is a word that expresses emotion and has no grammatical relation to other words in a sentence. • EXAMPLE: “Yuck! I see Grendel slowly stirring in his murky and vile lair!”

  7. INDEPENDENTPRACTICE: • Now complete the “Grammar Links: Beowulf 12 – 17” worksheet on your own. • Be sure to use a separate sheet of notebook paper for Exercise C!!!
