The Beginning • Born into a royal family between1753 and 1761; the date is unsure. • His mother was the daughter of a Kona chief. • Lived in Waipio and then Kailua. • Received special training from King Kalani’opu’u • Became king after his uncle died, and he conquered other islands. http://www.nps.gov/puhe/historyculture/kamehameha.htm
Accomplishments • He was a warrior, chief, and eventually king. • Kamehameha was entrusted with the war god Kuka’ilimoku by his dying uncle. • Conquered the islands Hawaii, uniting them and thus making it his kingdom; a feat no man had ever done.
Tributes • A statue stands in the National Statuary Hall collection. • A state holiday is celebrated every June 11th, a tribute to Kamehameha’s. • The statue is draped with leis during the celebration.
Fun Facts • When born, he was hidden after his birth because of threats from warring clans. • There have been at least four versions of the statue in Hawaii. • No one knows where he is buried. • He introduced the Hawaiian flag in 1816.
