  5. The Development Journey • Here is the way we want our part of the world to be. • Here is the path we will take to contribute • Here are the partners we depend on for progress. • What strategies will we use to help our partners progress? • Here is our sphere of influence (direct interaction) • Here’s how we will know how things are progressing. • What do we have to change in ourselves?

  7. Outcome Mapping – experience • Development research organisations only contribute to change. • Lasting change occurs when ownership and control move from the external organisation to local actors and organisations. • Many assessments provide very little useful feedback to help improve performance. • Development of learning capacities within organisations is often ignored

  8. Outcome Mapping - principles • Planning for and assessing both external results and internal performance leads to successful projects. • Planning, monitoring & evaluation are cyclical • Systematic self-assessment is a consciousness raising, consensus building and empowerment tool for those working on a project.

  9. Outcome Mapping – Central Concept Development is accomplished through changes in the behaviour of people

  18. STRATEGY MAPS

  19. Outcome Mapping – M&E • A program’s contributions to development are planned and assessed based on its influence on partners with whom it is working to effect change.

  20. Outcome Mapping – M&E • Focusing monitoring and evaluation on changes in partners illustrates that, although a program can influence the achievement of outcomes, it cannot control them because ultimate responsibility for change rests with its partners
