Outline • Status of FP6 Design Studies • Consequences • High power targets • MICE • Neutrino detector R&D • FFAGs • WDS Status
FP6 Design Studies ESGARD meeting 3rd September – from Roy Aleksan • Originally: 3 DS calls, November 2003, 2004, 2005 • Now: 0 or 1 call if 1, autumn 2005, deadline spring 2006 • Two reasons: - want to fund additional projects from round 1 70MEUR 90MEUR - big budget reduction (next I3: 60M 140M) • Leaves 30-40MEUR for round 2 • Only question: is it worth holding another DS for this! • Possibility had been known for some time • RA asked Brussels if new JRA in CARE possible Answers to both by end September
Joint Research Activities • We are currently assuming a positive response • ESGARD will review possible JRAs and select a few - NF - HIPPI - NED - HHH - LC - SRF - PHIN • Call likely to be November • Deadline March-April 2005 • 140MEUR
Joint Research Activities • Aim of a JRA…….. “The joint research activities aim to improve or enhance the service provided by [an existing infrastructure], in such a way that it could have widespread significance to a number of research communities in Europe. “Joint research activities should be innovative and explore new fundamental technologies or techniques underpinning the use of infrastructures by several research communities.” • Maximum 5MEUR from EC
Possibilities High power target JRA • Would need to be as generic as possible - HIPPI • Include: - solid & liquid targets - CNGS, T2K, NF, others……… • No funding before 2006: - final construction, running, analysis of TT2A - analysis of solid tests - interpretation for target station - design of real target - design of TS - safety analysis • Potential EU participants: Cranfield, Glasgow, RAL, Sheffield, CERN, NRG; FGES • Roger has plans for CARE meeting, seminar tour
Possibilities MICE/Front-end JRA • Needs to have finances sorted out • Needs careful selection of project: - upgrade of existing infrastructure - use by several research communities • Possible projects from VP - MICE 0: high precision emittance measurement - RF: windows, in magnetic field? - efficient pulsed 200MHz RF power amp? - high Tc SC magnets - others! • Potential EU participants: lots!
Possibilities Detector R&D I3 • CARE is accelerator R&D I3 • Detector R&D I3 is also possible! • In ESGARD: - Neutrino detectors - LHC upgrade - linear collider • Seems too complex & impossible to organise in time • Candidates should contact Roy! • Is a Neutrino Detector R&D I3 possible?
FFAGs Japanese layoutNo cooling!
FFAGs US layout Much reduced cooling!
FFAGs Prototype for proton cancer therapy neutron production (BNCT)
FFAGs In addition • 150MeV FFAG at Kyoto University to study ADS • ion FFAG at National Institute of Radiological Sciences, Chiba, for ion cancer therapy • Mitsubishi: proton & ion FFAG for cancer therapy electron FFAG for CT scanning, industrial irradiation • interest in UK for proton therapy & ion implantation • PRISM at Osaka for rare muon decays • proton upgrades at BNL, FNAL, KEK • 10GeV electron FFAG at BNL for eRHIC • LHC intensity upgrade (Almost) all scaling machines
Scaling vs Non-scaling • Non-scaling:- smaller, simpler (cheaper) magnets - smaller circumference - smaller variation in orbit time with energy • Problems: tune changes resonances acceleration outside buckets • Tune variation is rapid ( + muons make few turns) • But this and other features must be tested • Assessment of scaling and non-scaling for other appl.
UK FFAG e-model FFAG • Plan: build electron model non-scaling FFAG - ~10 to ~20 MeV - 15-20m circumference • If successful major impact on accelerator physics • EU needs more involvement in NF R&D • UK needs to get more involved in FFAGs in general • A lot of money for accelerator R&D in UK • DL has electron injectors Build e-model at DL! • Lots of enthusiasm from ASTeC • Large group formed to do this: Canada, Europe, Japan, US • Interest from IBA, starting to attract potential customers • Will target specific EU labs
FFAGs in FP6 Several possible candidate programmes: • DS in 2005, probably too late • New and Emerging Science and Technology - Insight - Pathfinder - Adventure “Adventure projects are ‘visionary’ research projects, aiming to create and/or develop new opportunities for science and technology which could have a very high potential payoff in the long term, in particular in new interdisciplinary areas. They are identified by their characteristics of significant novelty, very high ambition and high impact.” • Combating cancer • Waste transmutation • Clearly something EC is interested in funding • Will take advice when FP6 situation is clearer • It is also something EPSRC should be interested in!
WDS Status • Not started yet - EU situation - Study 2a • Plan is still to start “soon” • At NuFact’04: - should set a long term goal for the NuFact series cost optimised Neutrino Factory - should set goals for each NuFact to reach this • WDS • Aim to start discussion on this after Villars, Study 2a
