  2. The Study Design • What is required when teaching Unit 3? • Unit 3 investigates the characteristics of resources and the concept of region

  3. As the perception of what constitutes a resource varies …So too does its use and management

  4. The Study Design • A resource can therefore be seen as anything which occurs naturally or is created by humans provided that people use it to satisfy a need or want and these resources are about the processes and relationships operating in the past, present and the future • Regions are areas of various scales that have characteristics and features that distinguish them from other areas according to unique elements

The Study Design • The use and management of resources is therefore dynamic and changes spatially over time in response to the interactions between human activities, natural processes and legislative processes that humans put into it’s place. • Social, historical, environmental, economic and political factors can be used to predict and plan for future policies and strategies to ensure the sustainability of available resources

The Study Design • Governments and other organizations often use the concept of region for planning purposes when determining allocation of resources and development policies. • Although the process of globalization is influencing the world at a rapid rate, a regional perspective may give identity and help to make sense of such a process

The Study Design • The availability and utilization of water resources influences settlement patterns, infrastructure development and decision making in many Australian regions. • Problems of supply an debates about the water resource’s of rural and urban communities mirror processes that are happening elsewhere on the earth.

  8. The Study Design • Students must investigate a regional resource and a local resource in Australia. The regional resource will be water in the Murray Darling Basin. • Students will use fieldwork of the ‘Melbourne Docklands’ to investigate their local resource

Area of Study One • Use and Management of an Australian Water resource - This area of study focuses on water as a resource in Australia, with specific application to the region of the Murray Darling Basin - Wateris a critical resources on the earth’s second driest continent - You will understand the context of debates over the variations in the supply, distribution and demand for water - In the regional context of the MDB, the study focuses on the source, availability, distribution and utilisation of water

Area of Study One • (Continued) - Area of study one will also examine the dynamic nature of the relationships and interactions between natural processes and human activities - You will study a variety of management responses and evaluate strategies designed to achieve sustainable development -You will be able to develop an understanding of a significant resource and the concept of region, and develop a regional perspective in determining the availability, utilisation and sustainability of a resource.

  11. MDB • The Use and Management of an Australian Water resource is the first topic we undertake for unit 3. • Therefore, we begin by introducing resources. • What are they? • How do we classify resources? • And, we revisit Spatial Concepts

  12. However, before we do this, what Criteria do we need to cover?

  13. VCE ASSESSMENT HANDBOOK 2006-2009 • Outcome One • On completion of this unit the student should be able to analyse the use and management of water within the Murray Darling Basin region and evaluate its future sustainability

  14. Nature of the task • When setting the outcome, the teacher has a choice as to what sort of task we would like to set. • The one that you shall be completing is an analysis of geographic data which will relate to different aspects of Area of study one.

  15. An analysis of Geographical Data • The student completes an analysis of geographic data related to the geographic characteristics of resources • Geographical data includes visual information presented in the form of maps, remote- sensed images (infra- red photos, satellite imagery), field sketches, photographs and composite diagrams such as transects and flow charts • This task will be completed after school on April the 17th over a 75 minute time period.

  16. The analysis of Geographic data will contribute 50 marks out of 100 marks allocated for unit 3

  17. Performance Descriptors • These provide a guide to the standards expected when setting and marking the assessment tasks • They describe the knowledge and skills typically demonstrated by students who have achieved scores within each range on the assessment tasks
