Leeches • Until mid 19th century, patients were bled by the use of leeches • In 2004, the FDA approved the use of leeches as a medical device • Must be limited to when blood needs to be taken from a specific area of tissue • Such as when blood needs to be drained from an area surrounded by damaged blood vessels • Leeches take blood but also release a chemical that inhibit clotting, increasing blood flow • Also numb the area while blood is drawn
Blood Transfusions • First carried out in 1818 • Work when blood types match • Can happen when blood types don’t match
