MINERALS -a substance if it is naturally-occurring, inorganic, crystalline solid with a definite composition.
A substance is not called mineral unless it meets the following requirements: Minerals are inorganic They are formed in nature They are solids Atoms of a mineral have the same crystalline pattern The chemical compositions is the same with only very minor change
Only around 12 minerals are common in the earth’s crust and that what we called ROCK-FORMERS.
Identifying Minerals • 1. Luster-refers to the way light is reflected from a mineral surface.
2. Hardness – this property refers to the mineral’s resistance to being scratched.
4. Cleavage – is the tendency of a mineral to break along planes of weak bonding. 5. Fracture – minerals that do not exhibit cleavage when broken.
6. Color – is important in the identification of only a few minerals.
7. Specific Gravity – is a number which represents the ratio of the weight of the mineral to the weight of an equal volume of water.
8. Crystal Form – when the external features of a mineral reflect its orderly internal arrangement of atoms.
Minerals in the Philippines Non-metallic Minerals: Dolomitic limestone Feldspar Silica Clay
