Classifying Matter Anything with mass and volume Matter Two or more types of matter components keep their identity One type of matter Pure Substances Mixtures heterogeneous homogeneous Mechanical Mixtures Elements Compounds Suspensions Solutions Small components suspended within another cloudy Ex . Tomato juice Components blended Ex juice crystals in water or a copper penny (alloy) Cannot be chemically broken down into simpler substances All components visible Ex . oil and water Two or more elements combined can be chemically broken down to elements
Physical Properties • Properties – Describe characteristics of a substance that can be observed or measured without a new substance being produced.
Chemical Properties • Properties – Described or measurable characteristics of a substance after new substances are formed in a reaction .
Physical Changes • Physical Change - No new substance is created • Change affects the physical appearance but not the composition.
Chemical Changes • A NEW substance is created • The change affects the composition of matter.
Visible Indicators of Chemical Change • A New substance is produced • New solid • New gas ( bubbles are seen) • Light is produced • Heat is released (reaction gets hot- exothermic) or • heat is absorbed (reaction gets cold - endothermic) • Colour changewithanother indicator not just colourchange alone. • Reaction is often hard to reverse. (ex toasting bread)
