Classifying Matter Elements , Compounds and Mixtures
Element : simplest form of matter that has a unique set of properties Examples: Oxygen Hydrogen Carbon
Compound : substance that contains 2 or more elements chemically combined in a fixed proportion. Examples: Water, H2O Sucrose, C12H22O11 Carbon Dioxide, CO2
Mixture: a physical blend of two or more substances that are not chemically combined
Describing Matter Heterogeneous Mixture Homogeneous Mixture Composition is uniform throughout Also called a solution. Examples: Air Steel Vinegar Salt Water Milk • Composition is NOT uniform throughout Examples: • Salad • Chocolate Chip Cookie • Chicken Noodle Soup
matter Mixture Pure substance Physical changes
Pure substance Compound- chemical combination of two or more elements Element- Pure substance that cannot be broken down Chemical change Ex. burning ex. Hydrogen gas (H2) Ex. Water (H2O)
Mixture – Physical combination of two or more substance Heterogeneous mixture Physical combination Of 2 or more substances that is different throughout. Homogenous mixture Physical combination Of 2 or more substances that is the same throughout. ex. Salad dressing Ex. koolaid
Separating Mixtures • Differences in physical properties can be used to separate mixtures. Examples: • Filtration • Distillation • Magnetism
Filtration Separates solids from a liquid in a heterogeneous mixture.
Distillation Process which separates mixtures of liquids with different boiling points.
